Money-saving smartphone apps

Published on December 7th, 2011

While online retailers like Misco already offer great deals on a new smartphone, there are a number of apps you can get to help you drive down costs even further over the holiday season by downloading a few handy apps.

Toshl, for instance, is a free expense tracker that could be invaluable for keeping count of how much you’re spending on gifts, wrapping paper, food and other Christmas essentials. Available for iPhone, Blackberry and Android, it’s a simple-to-use tool that presents your spending in a variety of chart forms to show where your money is flowing every month.

Meanwhile, the Supermarket app lets you compare like-for-like value by converting different units into the same measurement and calculating which product offers the best value for money – perfect for comparing deals in the shops, particularly if you’re buying in for a big Christmas dinner.

The Trainline is another free app that will help you to get the best deals on train journeys if you’re planning on travelling around to country to see friends and family over the holidays. Rail fares have become more expensive in recent years and can put a serious dent in the present-buying kitty: this app helps to plan your journeys around peak times and avoid the more costly routes.
